Shillong: The alleged high-handedness of the Armed Forces in Shillong has surfaced once again after one Lascretice Lyngdoh of Lawsohtun complained of land encroachment by the Army in the area.

A group of soldiers on Monday erected a “Defence Land” signboard on a plot of land measuring around 30,000 sq feet belonging to Lascretice Lyngdoh at Lawsohtun Block VI, adjacent to the Government Sericulture Farm.

“Despite possessing the documents, the Army is not ready to accept that the land belongs to me”, Lyngdoh said.

Narrating the whole incident, Lyngdoh said that the problem started on July 11 when some soldiers trespassed into his land and threatened the caretaker.

“I submitted a petition to the concerned authorities and forwarded a copy of the same to the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills”, Lyngdoh added.

Later on the evening of the July 25, an army officer visited the spot and warned the caretaker to vacate the land immediately. “And on the following day, after a brief discussion with the officer, I was asked to leave the land”, Lyngdoh informed.

Lyngdoh has filed an FIR at the Kench’s Trace Police Station however the police have noted it as a civil land dispute case.

It may be mentioned that disputes of such nature have been reported on many occasions despite talks between the army authorities and the State Government.
