Guwahati: The situation in Assam’s violence- hit districts, where 56 people have lost their lives, was slowly returning to normal with no major incident reported.

The Tarun Gogoi government on Tuesday said its topmost priority is to provide relief and rehabilitation to the displaced.

“The state government remains committed to rehabilitate the displaced persons in their respective villages for which no effort will be spared,” the government said in a statement.

It said fixed, police pickets would be deployed in the villages and adequate security forces had already been deployed in the affected areas while a reshuffle of district officers had been effected to gear up the administration.

Gogoi welcomed the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s announcement of a Special Central Assistance to the violence- affected people.

“The state government and the Centre are working in complete synergy to tackle the situation,” he said.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram during a visit to relief camps in Dhubri district told the inmates.

“All help will be provided to the people and the government will also take care of your security.”

At present, the state government has set up 278 relief camps where around four lakh persons are being provided with food, drinking water and medicines. (PTI)
