Arunachal court takes up media attack cases

Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh government has appointed a judicial magistrate to take up the cases of attacks on media persons in the state.

Judicial magistrate Talo Potom was appointed specifically by the state government to try the cases of attacks on media houses and news persons, officials said on Wednesday.

CM Nabam Tuki had recently assured the media fraternity that the government will look into the cases. Meanwhile, 10 people arrested in connection with the April 15 ‘Arunachal Times’ vandalism case appeared before the court on Saturday for recording their confessional statements.

Hearing the bail application of one of the accused who sought the relief on the ground that he was a minor, the court on Tuesday directed the chief medical superintendent of Arunachal State Hospital here to constitute a medical board to determine his age and submit the report within a week.

The court also directed the police to keep him in safe custody till the receipt of the medical report and posted the next hearing to August 7.

Two trial is on in two more cases – assault on ‘The Arunachal Sentinel’ reporters Appu Gapak and Nyapi Bomjen, and attack on ‘Dawnlit Post’ associate editor V Ravindran. (PTI)
