NONGSTOIN: The KSU (Mawshynrut Circle) on Wednesday conducted a surprise inspection at the station of the company constructing the NH 44 (E) BSC C&C JV at Lai Kilo, Riangdo in West Khasi Hills.

During the inspection they found that there were 5 children below the age of 14 working there.

They also found that there were 26 labourers without any valid documents to prove their identities.

The President KSU (Mawshynrut Circle) Sranly Rongrin said that under the Interstate Migrant Workmen Act (IMWA) 1979 migrant workers were required to be in possession of valid documents establishing their identities.

It has also been mentioned under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act of 1986, employing children below the age of 14 years was a crime, he added.

The Union immediately deported all the labourers that did not possess documents including the child labourers.

Sranly issued a stern warning to the Company authorities not to employ under age children and labourers who did not possess proper papers in future.

They warned that stringent steps would be initiated against them if they did not heed to the Union’s warnings.

He also said that it should be the duty of the Govt to make sure that people entering into the state and working there had valid documents and not theirs.

It may be mentioned that a similar “raid” was conducted on the recently at Mairang at the station of the same company at Mairang by the FKJGP (Mairang Circle) led by its President Bobby Basaiawmoit.
