Itanagar: The Hornbill Nest Adoption Programme at Seijosa in East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh to protect the birds from extinction, has proved successful with most nests artificially created found to be occupied. Out of 29 nests created in the fringe area of Pakke Wildlife Sanctuary, 16 nests were occupied by the magnificent avian species, according to a report released by Mysore based Nature Conservation Foundation at Seijosa on Thursday.

Four nests were damaged during the recent forest fire in the fringe area of the sanctuary, the report said. The programme is an initiative of Ghora Aabhe Society a NGO from the district in association with NCF and the state environment and forest department. Nyishi youths were paid a monthly honorarium by the NGO to protect the hornbills from extinction.

After successful implementation of the programme, Seijosa is home to four endangered species of hornbills – Great Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbil, Oriental Pied Hornbill and the Rufous-necked hornbill. (PTI)
