Govt move on Elephant Reserve Forest criticized

 Shillong: The proposed move of the state government to declare parts of West Khasi Hills covering a vast areas joining Balpakram as the ‘Elephant Reserve Forest’ has been criticized by the Nokma Welfare Association – Shallang Area (NWA-SA) citing that the move was done without the consent of the people.

Stating that this move is against the ‘land tenure system’ of the people of the state, the NWA-SA has expressed their oppositions to this ‘unilateral’ move by the state government without taking into consideration the status and ownership of the land and Akhing of the Nokma of these areas.
