SHILLONG: The Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers and Employees Association (KJDSTEA) has alleged that the school managing committees of the various Government Deficit Schools in the state are deducting the salaries of the school teachers ranging from 2 to 20 percent for reasons best known to them.

KJDSTEA president ED Nongsiang stated that, “This trend is prevalent mostly in lower primary schools in the State,”.

The KJDSTEA president informed that they have informed the State Government about these illegal activities of the school managing committees.

“But till date, the Government has not initiated any action. In fact, they have even given the names of the institutions where the school managing committees are allegedly deducting the school teachers salary,” Nongsiang claimed. Meanwhile, he informed that they would wait till August 15 for the Government to release the pending 30 percent arrears.

Stating if the Government failed to release the pending arrears within this time, KJDSTEA said that they would be forced to resort to agitations to pressurize the Government for releasing the pending arrears.

“We are also unhappy over the delay in the release of the salaries of the teachers. The Government had informed that the delay in the release of the salaries is because the approval of the project of the current year takes place only after the budget session is over,” Nongsiang said

He said, “Normally, the approval of the budget is communicated to the directorate in May or June.”

“But it is not acceptable for the Government to continue to delay in releasing of the salaries since we are already in August,”

Meanwhile, KJDSTEA said that they are also disappointed over the delay of the Government to come up with the new service and management rules for both the teachers and school managing committees.

Informing that at the time when were expecting that the new service and management rules would come into effect shortly, he said that they were taken aback when they received a letter from the Government which stated that the idea of having the government service rules for the teachers was like giving them more autonomy and this would even allow them to get away from the clutches of the school managing committees.
