Guwahati: The hawkish faction of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has stated that it will strive to involve the United Nations (UN) by using international instruments to restore ‘sovereignty’ of Assam from the clutches of the ‘colonial occupation of India’.
The newly-appointed full-fledged ‘chairman’ of the ULFA faction, Dr Abhizeet Asom on Friday e-mailed a statement here saying that ‘ULFA will continue to strive to involve the United Nations by using international instruments which have been successfully used in similar circumstances in restoring the sovereignty wrongfully taken away from Assamese by colonial powers.’
“At this hour in the history of the ULFA, I feel it is an opportune time to inform the cadres of the organization and our supporters and well wishers that we shall work in close association with the freedom loving organisations of western south East Asia upholding the rights and fulfilling political aspiration of our people.”
“Help and support from countries which are sympathetic to our birth right to a sovereign independent statehood, near and far, will be earnestly sought”, the ULFA chairman who took charge on August 8 replacing Arabinda Rajkhowa , said.
The new ULFA chairman whose appointed has been dismissed as unconstitutional by the pro-talks faction led by Arabinda Rajkhowa said, “The ULFA cadres and leaders will use any means for self defense in tune with international norms while fighting the low intensity war imposed on them by the India security forces which have so far killed over 13000 Assamese youth. No one should also get involved in anti-Assam activities and the ULFA in the interest of freedom loving Assamese people.”
The ULFA leader pointed out that, “India is bent upon holding onto Assam which was once a sovereign entity, using military and paramilitary forces empowered by draconian Armed forces ordinance originally framed by the imperial colonialist to strangle the Indian Freedom Movement. The United Nations has asked India to remove this Act.
The appointment of the news chairman by the ULFA hawks replacing Arabinda Rajkhowa who is now heading the pro-talks groups, has confirmed the vertical split in the ULFA and it is bound to complicate the peace process involving the ULFA.
