Editor,

Through this letter I would like to bring to the notice of all the applicants who had applied for the post of Junior Accountant in the ICSSR-NERC, NEHU Campus, Shillong-793022 along with my brother vide the office advertisement through the Shillong Times dated July 8 2012 (Sunday) that this post has already been filled by the present junior accountant i.e Mr T Paite and the advertisement is just a way of fooling us all who had applied for the post. While going through the website of ICSSR-NERC on the following day after the advertisement was published in Shillong Times and under the caption of STAFF in this office website the name of this particular person (T Paite) was there but just two days ago when I checked again this was removed from their site. In my opinion I am sure that the Honorary Director of this office advertised this post just to save himself from any questions that he might have to answer if any NGOs find out because the qualification, age and experience are being worked out in favour of this Mr Paite. So I request the NGO’s of Meghalaya and other organizations to look into this matter so that the interest of the local youths is not exploited by someone or somebody in a higher level.

Yours etc.,

 Influx from Bangladesh

 Editor,

Regarding the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s statement regarding checking influx in the State, the reason for the present situation is because the government has not introduced the Inner Line Permit (ILP) since the time the state was created. Today illegal immigrants in the State have settled without any valid documents and encroaching into our space. The CM mentioned that tougher laws would be needed to take care of the influx in the state but till now nothing actually has been done regarding this issue. Therefore it is the right of every tribal of Meghalaya to see that adequate steps are taken to check this influx. I urge the NGO’s to take up measures so that no illegal immigrants from Bangladesh will enter Meghalaya and make it their dwelling heaven….

People of Meghalaya should take this issue seriously as it is vital for our identity as a tribal. The government is not bothered to take any measures as it will affect their vote bank so it is the duty of the people to take action now. If not Meghalaya will become the second Tripura. The situation in Garo Hills is an example as there are thousands of illegal settlers but till now nothing has been done by the Government to tackle this situation in Garo Hills and Garos are on the verge of losing their identity as well as their land. Let all NGO’s unite and work for the betterment of the State and to stop influx in our State.

Where lies the future of North-eastern youth?

 Editor,

Why does the rest of the nation look down on us why? One reason is that our youths of today (including myself ) have forgotten our rich and valuable culture and tradition. If we had retained the values in our culture people from all across our nation and the world would admire us. There is a saying that the youths are the future of the nation. But our own foundation is already shaky because we have become copy cats aping the west instead of showing the world, the richness and the uniqueness of our own traditional, cultural values and life style. God has blessed North Eastern India with beautiful people, tasty food, wonderful cultures and traditions, fantastic wildlife, amazing waterfalls, the climate, caves, rivers, the herbal life and many more. How fortunate we are to be born and brought up in this region! But we have ignored these natural gifts and neglected our own originality. We have become mere followers. We the youth of today must remember that we are not born to follow but to be change makers and lead others.

Sports needs attention

 Editor,

India has six medallists in the recently concluded Olympics, MC Mary Kom being one from the region. She will remain in the hearts of millions as a person who has fought all odds to be in the top and not only an Olympian medallist. She had a dream and followed it this far to be in the mega platform of sports. This Summer Olympic programme featured 26 sports and a total of 39 disciplines, and India had medals in just three sports. There are opportunities to increase the medal tally in the other events if we recognise sports as a rewarding career. Not every child may excel in studies but many can be sportspersons if we can tap their talents and nurture them. Many believe that for sports to develop in India, there should be public-private partnership. This partnership should also include leaders/parents/teachers/pastors, etc. The North Eastern region can produce sportspersons who can compete with the best in the country and the world Youths in schools/college/universities/clubs should be made aware about the sports policy and take up sports as a career. Until then, we will only be basking in the glory of the achievements of our Olympian medallists, especially our very own, Magnificent Mary.
