NONGPOH: Defying the diktat of the bandh called by the HNLC, over two thousand people from different walks of life came out of their homes to join hands in celebrating the 65th Independence Day Celebration at Ri Bhoi District.
The tri colour flag was hoisted by Social Welfare Minister John A Lyngdoh at NSCA Mini Stadium, Pahamsyiem, Nongpoh amidst the presence of Mawhati MLA Donbok Khymdeit, Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep Singh, Superintendent of Police Claudia Lyngwa and other senior bureaucrats and officials of the district. He also took salute of the 24 marching contingents comprising of district executive force of the police department, NCC, Bharat Scouts & Guides and schools.
Speaking on the occasion, Lyngdoh asserted that the State Government is maintaining zero tolerance towards surrendered militants and active militants and warned them of stern action if they indulged in any anti-social activities detrimental to the society.
He also makes a clarion appeal to the public for the ir cooperation and support in order to eradicate militancy in the State as to ensure conducive and peaceful atmosphere in the state so as to attract investors to the State for all round development.
The other highlight of the day included cultural programme by school students and a cricket match between Officials and Teachers where the latter humbled the mighty former by 30 runs followed by the prize distribution to the winners of the Open Half Marathon organized by the office of the District Sport Officer, Ri-Bhoi District which was held on August 14 from Mawroh to Nongtyrlaw in Nongpoh.
