Guwahati: Saturday night’s death of four persons in an Assam-bound special train coming from Bangalore in Jalpaiguri area of neighbouring West Bengal was enough to alarm Assam government to sound alert apprehending fresh violence once the Eid celebration is over in the State. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday convened a high-level emergency meeting and advised his officials to prepare a contingency plan immediately to tackle any emergency situation that may occur in next few days.

The meeting was attended among others by the State chief secretary N K Das, DG of Police J N Chaudhury, three former DG of Assam police.

Gogoi informed that four persons were killed and at least nine others were injured in an incident that occurred in a special train that was coming from Bangalore to Guwahati.

The incident occurred at Jalpaiguri area of West Bengal. Gogoi informed that Assam government officials were sent to North Bengal find out exactly what led to the death of the four persons,” Gogoi said.

The train, which was among three Bangalore-Guwahati specials that were coming to Assam, had reached Guwahati early Saturday morning.

Thousands of people from Assam and other Northeastern states working and studying in different states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala had already rushed home in view of ‘threat’ spread through the SMS that some miscreants might target them after Eid.

It has forced Assam government to remain on high alert to prevent recurrence of violence after Eid. Meanwhile, Assam government has requested the Railways not to provide any more special train from any state to Guwahati to transport panic-stricken people from the region working or studying outside. Gogoi said most of those people who have come back out of panic were now raring to go back to their place of work and education outside the State.
