Massive landslide on NH-44(E); commuters stranded for hours

NONGSTOIN: The forty-eight hours deluge in West Khasi Hills district on Sunday and Monday left commuters plying on NH 44 (E), the road between Shillong and Nongstoin, stranded following a massive landslide at Porsohsat, around 4km from Nongstoin.

Over 200 vehicles have been stranded on either side of the landslide spot on the highway.

Some vehicles were diverted to Nongstoin and Shillong via Mawkyrwat.

According to sources, the landslide is the result of continued and rampant quarrying of stone along the NH 44(E) by local villagers.

The landslide was spread across a 30-metre stretch of the highway.

Many commuters were forced to cross over the landslide spot on foot.

The landslide occurred at 10.30am on Tuesday and was immediately reported to the PWD authorities in Nongstoin who jumped into action and were able to clear the debris by 2 pm in the afternoon to restore traffic on the highway.
