New Delhi/ Tehran: Worried over continuing violence in Assam, the Centre on Tuesday asked the state government to act tough against elements indulging in riots and vitiating the atmosphere there.

Union Home Secretary R K Singh called up Assam Chief Secretary N K Das and Director General of Police J N Chaudhury and told them that strict action should be taken against anti-social elements and any possibility of social unrest must be nipped in the bud.

Official sources said the Central government was worried over some organisations trying to create social tension by calling for bandhs and favoured preventive action against leaders of such outfits.

Violence spread to new areas and other than Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) following two subsequent bandhs — on Monday and Tuesday– and Centre has taken it very seriously amid apprehension that if the flare up is not contained immediately, the situation may further deteriorate, they said.

Meanwhile, government has found that nearly 30 per cent morphed images and inflammatory videos, which incited Muslims leading to exodus of Northeast origin people, were uploaded in Pakistan and some of those involved in it were identified.

Top government sources also said India will push for framing a strong international cyber security law to trace and punish those involved in cyber crimes besides appointing a cyber security coordinator.

Asked whether Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh would raise the issue when he meets President Asif Ali Zardari on the sidelines of NAM summit, sources did not say clearly whether it would be discussed with the Pakistani leader.

Thousands of people from the Northeast living in cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and Pune left their work places last fortnight following rumours of reprisal attacks.

Government has already blocked more than 300 webpages where these contents were uploaded. (PTI)
