SHILLONG: The State Government is ready with the required infrastructure for a full fledged passport office in Shillong.

Informing this here on Tuesday, the Principal Secretary (Home) Passports, Hector Marwein said, “Only some formalities have to be completed (before the office is set up)”.

The proposed passport office in Shillong would give the much needed relief to the residents who till date have to travel all the way to Guwahati for obtaning their passport. According to Marwein, a few agreements are yet to be signed. “The regional passport office has to deploy some officers in the Shillong office,” he said.

The passport office will be located at the old office of the Directorate of Sports which is being given a face-lift.

It will initially serve as a Seva Kendra (help desk) where people can submit all their documents in Shillong but the papers will still have to be sent to the Regional Passport Office at Guwahati.
