Shillong: The young and energetic college student leader who received the highest number of votes in the last college election has spoken out for the first time on the gruelling experience he faced at the hands of ‘tormentors’ from the GSU who forcibly abducted him on Thursday morning.

Speaking exclusively to The Shillong Times from Tura, the general secretary of the Tura Government College Students’ Union (TGCSU), Nikman Ch Marak, confessed that he had become a victim for his fight for reforms within the parent student body – GSU.

“We had planned to hold a meeting of all the college unions today to appeal to the GSU to conduct fresh elections so as to give an opportunity for democratically elected leaders to take over. But the GSU misunderstood the situation and targeted me for no fault of mine,” said Nikman.

He revealed how a group of GSU members in two vehicles, a maruti gypsy and a black scorpio with tinted glasses, entered the government college premises and forcible took him away after assaulting him.

It is worth mentioning as to how student bodies can be allowed to use vehicles having tinted glasses when a law has been passed to remove the same.

One of the prime accused GSU leaders who lead the attack and kidnap of the general secretary has been identified as GSU environment secretary Chingsram Marak.

The accused, who happens to be a family man, is a committed felon who was earlier involved in the attack on the Director of the Horticulture department. No action was taken at that point of time due to his close proximity to the students’ body. He is currently absconding.

During the kidnapping of the TGCSU general secretary, two college secretaries for debate and literary witnessed the incident but were unable to do anything as the GSU goons sped away in their vehicles towards the GSU office.

The two secretaries tailed the kidnappers and even entered the GSU office seeking the unconditional release of their leader which failed to yield any result.

“I was hit several times on my eyes by the GSU environment secretary and this was witnessed by GSU president Tengsak G Momin and his adviser Manseng A Sangma, but they refused to give any help,” lamented Nikman.

He also revealed that GSU president Tengsak Momin had accused him of going against the GSU interests during the period of torture he endured at the hands of the student members.

“All along I had told them that I want nothing other than students’ grievances to be looked into and an appeal for democratic elections to the students’ union,” said Nikman.
