SHILLONG: Asha School was founded with an aim of rehabilitating, integrating and empowering differently abled children belonging to the families of armed forces, para military forces and civilian defence employees posted in Shillong and the school has finally completed its long journey of fourteen years.
The fourteenth year of the school was celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety on Thursday. The education at school has helped the differently abled children to be self sufficient in their life after being trained by specially trained educators. The Scholl present has thirty six differently abled children including 14 civilian children.
The theme for the function was highlighting the achievements of the school . Besides this, there was also a stage performance by two differently abled children, who before joining the school about five years back, could not even walk or speak.
To mark the occasion, special awards were given to the children and staff from Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and students from similar other schools like Jyoti Sroat School, Mary Rice Centre for Special Education, Roilang Vocational Centre, School and Centre for Hearing Handicap from Bethany Society, Dwar Jingkyrmen, Ferrando Speech and Hearing School were specially invited for the function. Speaking at the foundation day, Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities C Kharkongor appreciated the efforts of the school in their service for children with disabilities while assuring full support to the school in their quest for excellence.
