St Anthony’s wins debate competition title

 Shillong: The 9th RR Thomas Memorial Inter College Debate Competition organised by the Meghalaya college teachers association here at Sankardev College on Friday saw a vibrant participation of many students who spoke at length about the progress of technology and its contribution towards creative thinking.

The war of words between the groups who spoke for and against the motion-‘Information technology has stimulated creativity of the youth to attain higher levels’ indicated the enthusiasm and skills of the students.

Leader of Opposition Conrad Sangma who was present as the chief guest on the day said that information technology is an important tool where one can access information with just a click of a button.

“If utilized properly, the IT will benefit all of us but if people misuse it then it can create problems for all”, he said.

The best team for the debate competition was bagged by St Anthony’s College with Bipasha Bhattacharjee and Vivek Das, the 1st runners up from St Edmund’s College with Sneha Dutta and Prantho Saikia and 2nd runners up was bagged by the UCC College.

Sneha Dutta of St Edmund’s College was adjudged the best speaker of the day.

In another event, the 8th Mrs FI Hussain Memorial Inter College Debate held at Women’s College here on Saturday witnessed a vibrant participation of the students of different colleges in the city.

The topic for the debate which witnessed an enthusiastic participation from both sides, for and against the motion was on ‘Coalition Politics has retarded the Development in Meghalaya’.

The winners of the debate were Sneha Dutta and Prantoo Saikia of St. Edmunds College while Pooja Chetri and Kevin Jyrwa of BBS College emerged the runner up team besides Prantoo Saikia of St. Edmund’s College was declared the best speaker.

Participants in the debate included students from St. Dominic College, Sikkim Manipal University, St. Anthony’s College, St. Edmund’s College, BBS College, Imphal University and Women’s College.
