IMPHAL: The All Tribal Disables’ Union Manipur (ATDUM) has urged the state government of Manipur to set up a special school with hostel facilities for the physically challenged tribal people of Manipur at any convenient place.

The ATDUM reminded the state government of the earlier memorandum submitted to the Manipur education, Manipur on June 19 in this connection.

The ATDUM said that around 6000 tribal physically challenged persons are there in the hill districts of Manipur and that though these people wanted to go to school but due to their problems they are unable to fulfill their wish.

The Union then alleged that the society too is an impediment because they discourage the handicapped persons from attending schools.

To attend schools remains a dream for these physically challenged persons,” said the ATDUM.

There is only one school in Manipur which is situated at Takyelpat specially for blind, deaf and mute persons but other handicapped persons such as Locomotor Disabilities (LD) have no place in that school, said ATDUM.

They stressed for the need to establish a school where any nature of physically challenged people can attend in it.

“In view of the above facts and circumstances, it is therefore appealed to the concerned authority to kindly look into the matter seriously and make an appropriate order so as to construct a school building with hostel facilities in the interest of the tribal physically challenged persons in the state of Manipur at an early date,” the ATDUM urged.
