SHILLONG: Concerned over inept reply of PWD Minister HDR Lyngdoh in the House that the department constructs durable and all weather road, Paul Lyngdoh (UDP) said that the statement of the Minister appears to be a ‘bed time story’.

“Even though we are still on early part of the day, this tall claim of the PWD Minister in the floor of the House is only a fiction since it cannot be real with poor condition of the roads in the city,” Lyngdoh said during the Question Hour on Thursday.

He further said that with less vehicular traffic on the road due to the bandh called by the NGOs, he managed to take his vehicle and travelled in slow pace to be able to see the pot holes which are glaring right from the KHADC office in Garikhana upto Rhino point.

“I could not recall how many times this particular road was repaired in the past few months especially the portion at Rhino point”, Lyngdoh said.

He said as per his memory, the road along Rhino point was repaired at least three or four times during a very short period.

The UDP legislator also questioned as to whether the Government has taken any steps to take advantage of the new technologies which many States in the country have started to implement.

Instead of addressing the issue, the PWD Minister maintained that his department was constructing durable and all weather road in the State.

According to Lyngdoh, while the black topped road is known as an all weather road, the kuccha road is termed as fair weather road.

To a supplementary question, Lyngdoh said that the main reason for the present condition of road is “stress and strain” due to heavy vehicular traffic.

The PWD Minister claimed that the Government has already started to utilize the new technologies in a few road projects in Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills.

“We are using the German technology for road construction in Garo Hills,” Lyngdoh added.
