Guwahati: Media associations in Assam have filed a complaint against the police administration with the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) for failing to prevent attacks on mediapersons by bandh supporters recently.

Ten media associations in a complaint sent to the AHRC alleged that the local administration, police and paramilitary personnel on duty turned onlookers in many places when media persons were attacked by miscreants with sticks and sharp weapons.

In a letter to AHRC Chairman Aftab Hussain Saikia on Thursday, they alleged that during the Assam bandh called by the All Assam Minority Students’ Union on August 28 there was large-scale violence in several parts of the state and mediapersons were attacked by bandh supporters.

“We have reports that at least twelve working journalists were targeted by bandh supporters in Goalpara, Barpeta, Chamaguri and Tezpur and some of the journalists had received severe injuries and are still undergoing treatment in the hospitals,” the complainants alleged.

The complaint was filed by Journalist Action Committee, Assam Tribune Employees Union, Guwahati Press Club, Journalists’ Forum of Assam, Assam Union of Working Journalists, Electronic Media Forum Assam, Journalist Action Committee, Journalists’ Union of Assam, Assam Photo Journalist Association and National Federation of Newspaper Employees.
