SHILLONG: The Airport Authority of India’s plans of constructing a post office and bank near the Shillong airport at Umroi has not yet materialized even as the matter has been taken up at the highest level.

Presently, the residents of the four villages near the Shillong airport have to travel around 15 kilometers for their basic banking and postal needs.

Earlier, the Senior Manager, Air Traffic Control (ATC) Shillong Airport, Kailash Pati Mandal said that he had written letters to the Chief Post Master General, Meghalaya Circle to set up a post office in the area. He also contacted the Reserve Bank of India officials asking them to set up a bank in or near the airport that will cater to the needs of the residents of the village as well as the passengers.

However, nothing has materialized till date and villagers are still forced to travel to Umiam for meeting all their postal and banking needs.

Around eight thousand residents of Umroi will be benefited if the Airport Authority of India’s (AAI) initiative to persuade the authorities to setup a bank and a post office near the airport succeeds.
