Guwahati: A laptop computer each for all 26,788 students who have secured more that 60 per cent marks and passed in first division in High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Assam High Madrassa School Leaving Certificate (AHMSLC) examinations, 2012 conducted by Board of Secondary Education Assam, was given away as gift by the Assam government at a glittering function held at the National Games Stadium at Sarusajai here.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi awarded laptops to the students under Anundo Ram Barooah Award (ARB) Award scheme which is named after Assam’s first Indian Civil Service (ICS) officer and a noted litterateur. The award was set on the roll in the year 2005.
So far, over 1,40,000 laptops have been distributed to such students since the award was instituted in the year 2005. Assam government claimed that it was first in the country to institute such a unique award to encourage students who have done well in high school leaving examinations.
Giving away the laptop computers, Gogoi said, “The award is meant not only for improving the IT and computer skills of our students so that they can live up to the stiff competition in the higher level of study, but also for triggering an urge among the young students to excel in the life and studies.”
Pointing to the emotional surcharged atmosphere in the violence-affected State which is also plagued by myriad problems, Gogoi call up the students to aspire for knowledge and wisdom that make one sensible to the feelings of fellow people and level-headed.
“Overflow of emotions has no place in life and hitting the streets at the drop of a hat (he referred to the renewed agitation in the State against illegal migration from Bangladesh) is not going to solve any problem,” Gogoi said.
He further announced that the seven students who have secured the top three ranks in the HSLC and AHMSLC examinations, 2012 would be facilitated to visit the NASA in the US as a reward for their excellent performance in the examination.
