SHILLONG: After the Revenue Minister RC Laloo assured in the state Assembly to visit the flood-affected areas of Garo Hills, Congress legislator Sayeedullah Nongrum, who represents one of the flood-affected areas, sought the intervention of the Minister to shift the affected people to safer places.
In a letter addressed to Laloo on Wednesday, Nongrum said before the visit of the Minister, there should be proper assessment of the damages caused by the flood. The flood had displaced people of Bhaitbari, Marasuti, Angarkata, Phershakandi, Magurmari, Garodubi and Haripur-Silkata.
“The damage was so much that people cannot stay in the relief camps during the night because there is apprehension that at any moment their camps will be washed away. So they had to seek shelter somewhere”, he added.
The worst affected areas are Marasuti and Angarkata where the land will be eroded, he said.
He also urged the Minister to provide Rs 35,000 to each to the families whose houses were damaged.
Inquiry sought : Meanwhile, in a separate letter addressed to the Chief Secretary WMS Pariat on Tuesday, Nongrum said that the statement made in the House by the Revenue Minister regarding the disbursement of relief materials does not tally with the actual disbursement of the materials on the ground.
“There should be a thorough inquiry into the matter to avoid embarrassment on the part of the Government”, Nongrum said.
According to Nongrum, he had arranged Rs 1 lakh to provide materials like bamboo to the affected people. He urged the government to provide other incentives to the affected people at the earliest.
