New Delhi: The situation in the violence-hit districts of Assam has “improved considerably” and no fresh incident has been reported in last few days, the Centre on Friday said.

“The situation has improved to a great extent. There has been no fresh incident of violence in the past few days,” Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said after a meeting with Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde here. Echoing his views, Shinde said Gogoi briefed him about the current situation and conveyed that the affected people have started leaving camps for their respective villages.

“The situation in Assam has improved. Normalcy is getting restored,” he said. Shinde said he briefed the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs on Thursday explaining the reasons and circumstances leading to the violence in Bodoland Territorial Council area and steps taken to bring back normalcy.

Gogoi said he has submitted before the Home Minister a new set of guidelines for National Population Register and requested him to approve setting up of more tribunals for detection of illegal immigrants in the state.

“We need about 100 foreigners tribunals. Since the tribunals are required to be run by retired judges and Assam has very few retired judges, we want the relevant act to be amended so that judges from out side the state can be appointed,” he said. Gogoi said the state currently has 36 foreigners tribunals and with the setting up of the additional tribunals, pending cases could be disposed off quickly. Gogoi also held a meeting with Union Rural development Minister Jairam Ramesh. (PTI)
