SHILLONG: In a tragic incident, two constables of the 1st MLP battalion were drowned while undergoing a special commando training on counter-insurgency and jungle warfare at the ITBP Training School at Mahidanda, near Uttar Kashi, Uttaranchal on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Kumbinon Mawlong and Dannylang Nongkhlaw .

The two Constables were part of a large group of police personnel who volunteered to undergo strenuous and specialized commando training on counter-insurgency operations. The current batch of 116 personnel had started their training from August 23.

Their bodies would be brought back home by air after completion of all the formalities and their family members have already been informed about the incident, police sources said.

It is alleged that the duo did not know how to swim.

No life jackets were given to the trainees who were asked to swim in the cold water.

Meanwhile, the Director General of Police N Ramachandran has deputed SK Jain, ADGP (Special Branch), to conduct an independent inquiry into the incident.

“It is a very sad news for us and an independent inquiry would be conducted from our side,” Ramachandran added.

He also informed that compensation would be paid to the families of both the ill-fated constables from the State Police fund.
