5 shortlisted for Meghalaya ‘Youth Icon of the year’

 SHILLONG: Politician, Conrad Sangma, Innovator, Eugene Niangti, Entrepreneur, Larsing Ming Sawyan, Youth Leader Junestar Kharbuli and social activist Lhai Sing Khongshei are the top five nominations who have emerged for the title of Meghalaya Youth Icon.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and Urban Affairs Minister Amapreen Lyngdoh got only minimal votes from the 20,000 votes sent via SMSes.

The Managing Director of  Avenues, Mark Stone Laitflang who is the main organizer of the event, told a news conference on Saturday that based on people’s choice, the five have emerged as potential candidates for the Meghalaya Youth Icon.

The SMS voting will start for the final round from September 16 till October 1 midnight and the name of the winner will be announced on October 2.

According to Laitflang, an individual can send only five SMSes mentioning their choice of names to the cell phone to nominate the Icon. For example SMS: ICON LHAI SING KHONGSHEI to 9774 21 2161.

Laitflang said that it was based on people’s vote that the top 5 Icons among the 254 names which were sent by the people via SMSes have emerged for the choice of Meghalaya Youth Icon. The panel of judges was not involved in the selection of names, he added.
