Shillong: The State Police on Thursday filed a charge sheet against GNLA chief Champion R Sangma who was produced in the court on Thursday.

The matter, however, could not be pursued further due to poor attendance in the court in view of the Bharat Bandh.

However, the court extended judicial custody of the GNLA chief by another 14 days, the fourth time the court has done so.

Speaking to media persons, Champion’s lawyer Sujit Dey said that Section 12 of the Indian Passport Act which was earlier levelled against the GNLA chairman has been dropped. He, however, informed that Champion has been booked under Section 121 (A) (attempting to wage war against the Government of India) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 16, 18 and 38 apart from section 1 and 2 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (1967).

The court will hear the allegations levelled against the GNLA chief at the next hearing scheduled on September 25.

The lawyer also informed that he would file a fresh bail application as per the direction of his client.

The GNLA chief was arrested by the State police on July 30 from along the Indo-Bangla international border after he was allegedly pushed by Bangladeshi authorities into India.
