SHILLONG: The government has made it compulsory for visitors to the Shillong District Jail to produce identity cards during entry.

The sudden urge to beef up security has been necessitated since GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma is being lodged in a special cell in the jail.

DG (Prisons) Kulbir Krishan informed news persons on Thursday that all visitors should produce identity cards which can vary from PAN cards to EPIC before entering the jail premises.

“Every visitor is photographed at the entrance to keep a record of the visitors which would add to the safety measures in the jail,” he added.

The jail staff and the workers have also been issued two categories of identity cards.

Though there were efforts to improve security in the jail premises after the infamous Shillong jail break episode on May 31, 2009, fund constraints had delayed the same.

Krishan also informed that a three-tier security arrangement has been put up in the jail to scrutinize visitors to the jail.

The Jails department has already floated a tender for the purchase of CCTV cameras which are likely to be installed in and around the jail premises within this year.
