NONGPOH: Prompt action from the police helped save the lives and property of a family at Umdokha village in Ri-Bhoi after they were accused of practising witchcraft by the villagers.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when an angry mob gheraoed and attacked the house of Tribon Langi and Kurialbel Manih and pelted stones at them following allegations that the couple practised witchcraft and black magic due to which many children in the village had fallen sick.

The situation failed to normalize completely even after the police took stock of the situation at the earliest. Later on Friday, the police team from Ri-Bhoi led by Deputy Superintendent of Police B J Laloo and officer in-charge of Nongpoh Police Station NT Lawai visited the village and held a meeting at Umdohkha Them in which the police team warned the mischief makers of stringent actions.

The meeting was also attended by the Rangbah Shnong of Umdohkha Them Iarlin Umbah.

It may be mentioned that this is not the first instance when people have been assaulted after being accused of practicing witchcraft in the State.

Earlier in the year one Johnson Marak of Joiram village in Balat, East Khasi Hills was ostracised for allegedly practicing witchcraft.
