Shillong: Remembering the life and contributions of former MLA (L) Ardhendu Chaudhuri, who met with an untimely death in a chopper crash in 2004, the Ardhendu Chaudhuri Charitable Trust and Rilbong Sports and Cultural Club on Saturday launched many welfare schemes for the BPL families.

s to the former MLA on his 8th death anniversary at Rilbong community hall here on Saturday, the trust also arranged for a unique programme to remember Late Chaudhuri’s life and contributions through actions by identifying families belonging to the backward section of the society for distributions of these schemes.

Around 89 cards were issued to BPL families under the trust scheme while 14 families were handed out letters for collection of CGI sheets and 16 women were identified for the collection of sewing machines under the MLA scheme.

Managing trustee of the Ardhendu Chaudhuri Charitable Trust and local MLA Manas Chaudhuri while recalling the life of Late Ardhendu said “Ardhendu’s ultimate motive was to serve the people so we have decided to act upon his motive through our actions so as to continue with his legacy”.

Late Chaudhuri’s life and contributions were recalled by his co-workers and by people from different walks of life. They also shared valuable and endearing insights into his life and character during the programme.

“He was definitely a man of action and a man of the people, someone who always wanted to sort out problems, no matter how big or small it was”, former Rangbah Shnong of Bishnupur and Kench’s Trace S Swet said.

It may be recalled that after the tragic incident in 2004, the Government and various organizations had paid tributes to the departed souls by organizing commemorative functions. However, this was short-lived as there was no Government function a year later.

An exception was the commemorative function of a charitable organization — Ardhendu Chaudhuri Charitable Trust, which has continued to hold functions for the last seven years to recall the contribution of Late legislator, Chaudhuri, who was one of the victims of the chopper crash. The function was also attended by Congressman Dr Manas Das Gupta, Vijay Raj from the cantonment board, local residents besides others.
