SHILLONG: In an interesting move, several political parties from the State have decided to field a common candidate in Sohiong to take on Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh in the Assembly elections due in 2013.

In a unanimous decision, five political parties-UDP, BJP, NCP, KHNAM and LJP-have decided to put up the project manager of Meghalaya Government Construction Corporation (MGCC) Breston Kharphuli. Kharphuli, however, will contest on a UDP ticket.

Informing this here on Monday, UDP’s East Khasi Hills unit president RA Lyngdoh said those who had contested the last Assembly election from the constituency have decided to offer their support to Kharphuli, who hails from Rangshken near Sohiong.

Kharphuli has already applied for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) and is awaiting clearance from the government.

Lyngdoh, who had represented Sohiong earlier, also claimed that majority of the members of Congress, mostly contractors, would join the UDP shortly.

“They are currently lingering with the Congress for the sake of getting major contract works,” Lyngdoh said.

Coming down heavily on the sitting Sohiong legislator, he said despite holding charge of PWD, he (HDR Lyngdoh) failed to improve the roads in the constituency.

“Majority of the roads (in the constituency) are in a dilapidated condition,” Lyngdoh added.
