SHILLONG: In a bid to curb incidents of cyber crimes, the state government has directed to all cyber café owners in the state to install Closed circuit Television (CCTV) besides maintain records of people and not to allow them to use services without an identity card.
The Meghalaya Cyber Café Rules 2012, which was approved by the State Cabinet last month, was notified on Monday under the Meghalaya Information Technology (IT) Act.
“The Meghalaya Cyber Café Rules 2012 will be notified in the Meghalaya Gazette today (Tuesday),” Information and Technology Commissioner and Secretary DP Wahlang said.
Informing this at a one-day seminar on ‘Cyber World and its challenges’ organised by Lady Keane College here on Tuesday, Wahlang said the rules were framed to tackle cyber crimes emanating from cyber cafes in the state and preventing the cyber cafes in town from propagating wrong ideologies.
According to the rules, any person going to a cyber café will have to prove his identity by showing an identity card issued by a competent authority besides bestowing the responsibility of the cyber café owner to ensure that any person visiting his café does not use the internet for criminal acts.
According to the IT Commissioner, the rules have been framed as such to give access to the police the details of anyone using the cyber cafes at any given time.
