JOWAI: The Jaintia Hills Trucks Owner’s Association (JHTOA) has demanded unconditional release of its chairman, Sumarhok Suchiang of Shangpung village, who was arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly vandalising a truck during the strike called by the Association in protest against the hike in Transit Challan fee.

JHTOA president, Helping Phawa, who is a former MDC, informed that the Association has demanded unconditional release of Suchiang.

“The police have falsely blamed him. We had conducted investigation and found that some unknown miscreants were involved in stone pelting in which the windshield of a truck driven by one Deo Pyngrope of Ummulong was damaged.

According to the JHTOA president, the incident took place near Shangpung on Tuesday night. The chairman was on his way home from Jowai and had stopped his vehicle at the spot to find out what had happened. Later while he was relaxing inside his car at the same spot, police came and arrested him.

“The police have prepared a false FIR and asked the illiterate driver to put his signature on the paper,” the Association alleged.
