SHILLONG: It was an embarrassing moment for West Khasi Hills Deputy Superintendent of Police TC Chacko and another police personnel when they were disallowed by jail staff to interrogate GNLA chief Champion Sangma inside the Shillong Jail on Thursday.

The jail authorities denied permission to the police personnel since Sangma was not in police custody.

According to police sources, it was with the permission of an Additional District Magistrate from Nongstoin that the police personnel had come to interrogate the GNLA leader who is locked up under judicial custody. The police official had wanted to interrogate Champion in connection with a case registered against the militant leader in Nongstoin.

The sources said that the contention of the jail authorities was that since the GNLA chief is in judicial custody they cannot allow police personnel to interrogate him.

The jail authorities also conveyed to the police personnel to take the GNLA leader in police custody if they wanted to further quiz the rebel leader.
