SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Medical Service Association (MMSA) has turned down a request from the State Government to refrain from resorting to further agitations over the issue of alleged assault and detention of Dr WN Sangma by the police.
The Health and Family Welfare department on Friday said the MMSA should wait for the report of the magisterial inquiry and added that the department would take adequate steps based on the report of the magisterial inquiry to ensure that a congenial atmosphere prevails in Garo Hills.
However, MMSA general secretary Dr Aman War said they would not be accepting the magisterial inquiry which has been instituted by the Government.
“It is a futile exercise to set up such an inquiry when the South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner has already alleged that the doctor was drunk. We do not think that the report conducted by a junior officer would supersede the observation of the Deputy Commissioner,” Dr War said.
He said that the Deputy Commissioner should have waited for the inquiry report before coming up with such a statement.
“It is really sad that the head of the district is favouring the police,” the MMSA general secretary said.
War also informed that they have decided to go ahead with the proposed State-wide agitation from Monday.
A 24-hour cease work by the doctors on Thursday had parlayed the functioning of hospitals in Garo Hills.
