Itanagar: Expressing concern over rise in crime against women in Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki on Friday assured the Assembly that stringent action would be taken against those involved in cases of torture and discrimination against women.

Responding to a supplementary question raised by Laeta Umbrey of AITC, the chief minister said, considering the worrisome situation, the state government has taken a few steps to contain crime against women.

The state government has set up three anti-human trafficking units in Pasighat, Itanagar and Tezu and three more units are being constituted at Seppa, Changlang and Daporijo. DIGP (Crime) has been appointed as the nodal officer.

Highlighting three years’ state-wise crime against women data in the House, he said, there were 190 cases in 2010 and 171 cases were registered in 2011, while 122 cases were recorded up to August 2012 at various police stations.

Observing certain crimes in the recent past, State Women Commission (SWC) led by its chairperson, had submitted a memorandum last month to the chief minister demanding that bail should not be granted to rape and murder accused, providing of personal security to the victims, appointment of child marriage prevention officer to check the age girls and independent functioning of judiciary, among others.

To wipe out crime against women from the society so many organizations are working to educate and create social awareness among the masses, he said and hoped that law enforcing agencies will act properly and effectively. (UNI)
