Jamshedpur: In a praiseworthy and distinctive way to help the under-privileged section of the society, the Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) in collaboration with an NGO here has planned an unique initiative to collect donations of ‘un-used but usable medicines’ from people and re-distribute them for the benefit of ailing poor.

The initiative would be rolled out by a city based NGO ‘Cause for Change’ from October two to eight as part of ‘Jamshedpur JoyFest – Joy of giving week’, the fourth edition of the annual weekly program designed to promote the ‘habit of helping the under privileged people around us’ by the premier B-school in association with local educational institutions, industries, rotary, community organisations, NGOs and general public.

Dr Madhukar Shukla, senior faculty of XLRI and coordinator of the program said today that the collected medicines would be sorted and distributed to charity clinics and health camps organised by NGOs and civil society bodies.

‘As part of the festival XLRI girl students will also visit villages nearby Jamshedpur to spread awareness about personal health and hygiene among women.

They will counsel them and provide free samples for sanitation for one month to make them aware about the value of hygienic living. This initiative has been named ‘Jagriti’,’ he said.

On October six, XLRI students with medical degrees, in partnership with volunteer medical practitioners, would also hold health camps to provide free medical check-ups, and distribution of basic medicines in the rural and slum areas, he added.

Dr Shukla further mentioned that various other initiatives had also been planned.

‘Donation and distribution drive to collect wearable (clean and complete) clothes, blankets, shawls items is planned, which will be distributed to the less-privileged through partner NGOs.

As ‘Ann-Daan’ initiative, a donation and distribution drive for dry ration (rice, lintels, rice corn and biscuits) would be accepted.

Another such drive to provide simple utility items like the nail cutters, thick plastic sheets, mosquito nets, thermometer etc to the villagers and education support program for under-privileged would also be taken up,’ he said. (UNI)
