U Soso Tham statue to be unveiled on October 3

 SHILLONG: The much-awaited life-size statues of the Legendary Khasi Poet, U Soso Tham which were installed at two places in Sohra recently will be finally made available for public viewing on October 3.

The two life-sized statues of the bard which were installed at the Cherra Presbyterian School, Nongsawlia and Madan Shad (Dancing ground) of the Seng Khasi at Upper Sohra will be inaugurated by local MLA and Parliamentary secretary of Tourism, Dr PW Khongjee and another by chairman of Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) Ronnie V Lyngdoh. The inauguration function will be followed by several programmes as a mark of tribute to the Khasi poet at St John Bosco Boys HS School at Sohra.

The statues were carved in Kolkata at a total expense of Rs 50 lakh and was erected in Sohra as a mark of respect to the great man besides encouraging the youth to follow the footsteps of the bard also known as a ‘Messiah’ of the Khasi community.

The overall work has been undertaken with the cooperation of SDO (Civil)-Sohra, Khasi Author’s Society, family members of U Soso Tham and the U Soso Tham Celebration Committee.
