NONGSTOIN: The lone lower primary school at Lawrynjam village near Pariong in West Khasi Hills district is on the verge of shutting down after the Government demanded a no objection certificate (NOC) from the village authorities with regards to normal functioning of the school.
This lone school in the village has, incidentally, only a single teacher and around 20-22 students. The school was functioning normally until the teacher stopped attending to her duties.
The school managing authority along with the village authorities issued a letter to the teacher on June 18 last, asking her to resume her duties. The teacher responded to the letter and promised to attend classes only to disappear again.
Accordingly, another letter was dispatched on July 28 but there has been no response from the teacher’s side as yet.
Frustrated, the villagers approached the KSU Mawthadraishan Circle and sought their intervention.
The KSU, while reacting on the issue, expressed surprise that the Government has asked the village authorities to issue a no objection certificate to shut the school, without taking into account the future of the students who are at the losing end without any fault of their own.
The Union has requested the Government to take stern action against the teacher concerned and to revoke the decision to shut the school.
