SHILLONG: After the initial move to open offices and field candidates in the upcoming State elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is now undecided whether to contest the polls.
There were initial efforts on the part of Trinamool to contest the Assembly elections following which the party had also sent a representative to the State to hold talks with the leaders of political parties in the State including the Congress and UDP.
Former MPCC president OL Nongtdu had, recently, said that the party had approached him but he was not interested in joining Trinamool.
After the Mamata Banerjee-led party wrested power in West Bengal in 2011, the party had fielded candidates in other Northeastern states in the Assembly elections and had even won a few seats.
The party has five MLAs in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly, seven in the Manipur Assembly and one legislator in Assam.
Recently, the party high command also contacted a former Congress leader in Shillong to get feedback from him on whether Meghalaya will prove to be a ‘fertile ground’ for Trinamool to grow.
However, the Congress leader was non committal.
Another political party from outside the Northeast region, Lok Janshakti Party had contested the 2008 Assembly polls in Meghalaya fielding as many as 18 candidates, but drew a blank.
