SHILLONG: The State government has put under suspension the leader of the police team which had detained the medical officer of Chokpot PHC Dr WN Sangma.
Informing this here on Monday, the State Director General of Police N Ramchandran on Monday said the action was taken on the basis of the findings of the inquiry committee headed by IG Police (Eastern Range).
The incident occurred last month when police allegedly detained Dr Sangma after he refused to allow police personnel to park their vehicles inside the hospital campus.
While admitting that the act of the police personnel cannot be justified as the doctor was handcuffed, the police chief, however, said that even the doctor was obstructing the police from using the road.
“He (doctor) was also in an inebriated condition at the time of the incident,” the police chief added.
The whole team, involved in the incident, comprising 15 police personnel has been sent for correctional training, Ramchandran said adding that there would be a departmental proceeding and action would be taken against any one found guilty.
Meanwhile, responding to the state government’s decision the Meghalaya Medical Services Association (MMSA) has withdrawn its two-day ceasework from Wednesday.
“After we received the official letter from the government today (Monday), we have decided to withdraw our proposed ceasework”, the MMSA general secretary Dr Aman Warr said.
