BSNL football tournament kicks off in city

 SHILLONG: The 12th All India BSNL Football Tournament started in Shillong with a colourful opening ceremony on Tuesday at the JN Sports Complex, Polo.

Altogether 11 teams from different parts of country ncluding host team NE-I Circle (Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura) participated in the opening ceremony despite the bandh called in the state.

In the first matches, Punjab beat NE-II Circle 2-0 while Karnataka demolished MTNL Delhi 7-0.

The host team managed to defeat MTNL Mumbai 2-0. Similarly, Tamil Nadu beat NE-II 4-1 and Maharashtra beat MTNL Delhi 9-0.

Meghalaya and Assam police set to clash

In another football event in the city, Meghalaya Police will play a friendly match against their Assam counterparts as part of the ongoing celebrations of 150 years of the Indian police.

The match will be held at JN Stadium, Polo on October 18.

The state’s policemen then travel to Guwahati to play the Assam Police on their home turf in the second leg of their friendly encounter on October 27.
