Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front on Wednesday categorically rejected any possibility of an alliance with the ruling Congress during the upcoming panchayat polls in Assam or the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
“There have been speculations that AIUDF is willing to have an alliance with the Congress for the panchayat polls next year and the Lok Sabha elections. I can clearly state that such a question does not arise,” AIUDF president and Lok Sabha MP Maulana Badruddin Ajmal said here.
The AIUDF, the principal opposition party in Assam, is a constituent of the Congress-led in UPA in Centre.
Speaking to reporters after conclusion of the party’s two-day General Council meeting, Ajmal refrained from answering a question regarding the party’s poll prospects.
Regarding allegations against him of playing a role in the recent violence in lower Assam, Ajmal said “I have time and again denied the charges.”
The AIUDF leader said his party’s General Council has demanded rehabilitation of all those displaced during the violence in their original homes without pre-conditions.
“Around 1.58 lakh displaced people are still left in camps of the 4.86 lakh who had left their homes following the violence while the rest have gone back to their homes. I think it is a satisfactory progress as 75 per cent people have gone back to their homes in past three months.
“The government should now take measures to ensure that the rest also return and people are able to go back to their normal lives,” Ajmal said.
He also refused to comment on cases related to Bodoland People’s Front legislator Pradip Brahma, who had been arrested by police in August for involvement in the clashes.
Ajmal also expressed dissatisfaction over the slow pace of seizure of illegal arms in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD).
The party also condemned the call by some organisations that people displaced in the recent violence should be resettled only after verification of their citizenship. (PTI)
