SHILLONG: The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) chairman Champion Sangma could not be produced in the court due to the strike in the Shillong District jail on Wednesday even as the court took up the matter of framing charges against the former DSP.

According to sources, the court will now issue its order on the charges on October 26.

Earlier on Tuesday, Champion was produced in the court which could not function due to absence of staff and the GNLA chairman’s lawyer Sujit Dey.

As many as ten cases have been registered against the GNLA chief who was arrested by the State police after he was pushed back by the Bangladesh authorities on July 30.

Meanwhile, the agitating jail staff expressed willingness to hold talks on assurance that they would no longer be ‘harassed’ by the top official.

In their eight-point demand, the jail employees, who launched their second phase of agitation on Wednesday, stated that summoning the staff to the DG’s bungalow should be stopped with immediate effect and transfers should be done as per government norms.

When asked about the reason, jail authorities said that they were just following the order issued by the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills which stated that no outsider should be allowed to enter the jail premises.

The agitating staff also demanded an inquiry against the DG’s (Prisons) alleged highhandedness.

Earlier on September 30, the employees had gone on a similar strike against the DG giving a 10-day deadline for him to step down.
