Series of strikes line up in Manipur

Imphal: Series of agitations are in the offing in Manipur.

Co-ordination Committee (CorCom) of seven militant groups namely KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro) , RPF and UPPK has called a total general strike on October 15 next.

Cor Com said Manipur was annexed on October 15, 1949 and the day will be observed as ‘National Black Day’. General strike will be imposed from midnight to 1800 hrs of October 15.

“To protest death of Amom Rajen of Kumbi Terakhong, Bishnupur District, the JAC has called a 24-hour general strike in the state with effect from 0500 hrs of October 17 next.

Amom Rajen Singh (46), a teacher was found dead about 10 metre away from near Cossipara Police Station, which is about 10 kms away from Howrah Railway Station on October 2 last.

Jiten, a relative of Rajen, claimed that the deceased had called up a relative informing that he was threatened by some persons wearing police uniform . The JAC had asked the state government to urge West Bengal government to enquire into the death of the teacher.

Federation of Regional Indigenous Societies (FRIENDS) has also decided to launch a stir if the government fails to introduce the Inner Line Permit in Manipur to check influx of illegal immigrants.

Over 30 per cent of Manipur’s population are illegal immigrants and in border areas like Jiribam population of immigrants from Bangladesh has reached 70 per cent. According to FRIENDS, the stir will be launched from November 19 next. (UNI)
