SOMALA opposes FDI in mining sector

SHILLONG: The Social Organizations of Meghalaya Against Land Alienation (SOMALA) has opposed the state government’s proposed move to allow foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in mining sector.

In a memorandum to the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, the SOMALA urged the State Government review its decision and exclude the FDI clause from the State Mining Policy.

The state cabinet recently approved the Meghalaya Mines and Mineral Policy, 2012 which allows foreign direct investment and inputs from overseas corporate bodies and non-resident Indians in exploration, mining, value addition in mineral sectors and environmental protection as per the guidelines laid down by the Union Government.

According to SOMALA, during their previous discussion, the Mining Minister had agreed to exclude FDI from the purview of the draft mining policy.
