SHILLONG: “There is no authenticity in the new map published by the Survey of India under the direction of Surveyor General of India, Dehradun in 2009 which shows Langpih as a part of Assam,” said Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma.
The Chief Minister told this to the Chairman of People’s Movement and UDP legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit on Thursday.
Basaiawmoit on Thursday called on the Chief Minister seeking a clarification regarding contradictions figured in the two maps of Meghalaya especially related to the disputed areas.
“Dr Sangma has asked us to wait for the clarification from the Survey of India in this regard”, Basaiawmoit told media persons after the meeting.
The issue was also raised by the leaders of the different NGOs who met the Chief Minister on Thursday.
The disparity in two separate maps was revealed through an RTI filed by CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing recently.
The map prepared in 1979-80 clearly indicated Langpih, along the West Khasi Hills-Kamrup boundary, as an area within Meghalaya while the Block I and Block II areas were shown as ‘disputed’ but interestingly, the map published in 2009 by the Survey of India showed that Langpih is in Assam.
Though Block I and Block II were mentioned as “disputed” in the 1979-80 map, the second map of 2009 did not have any mention of Block I and II.
Commenting on Langpih issue, Basaiawmoit said that the Chief Minister has assured to carry out some developmental in Langpih soon after the Puja celebration.
Basaiawmoit further stated that the government denied reports pertaining to the setting up of an Assam Police Outpost at Khanduli.
