SHILLONG: The HSPDP has opposed the move by Assam Government to construct a 2MW power project on the Khri river falling under the ‘disputed areas’.

HSPDP spokesperson G Nonglong said that the party would not allow the hydel project to come up at the Khri river at any cost since the proposed dam is falling under the ‘disputed areas’.

“Allowing setting up the project would tantamount to accepting the claim by Assam and indirectly agreeing to the map published by the Survey of India in 2009 as a valid one,” Nonglong said in a statement issued here on Saturday.

He however said that the party will not accept the map published by the Survey of India which excludes Langpih, Block-I and Block-II from Meghalaya.

“HSPDP accepts the 1979-80 map of the inter-state boundary between Meghalaya and Assam as this was done in accordance with the definition of Sub-Para (2) of Para 20 of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution,” he said.

Earlier on Thursday, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma had asserted that it would not be possible for the Assam government to build a dam on Khri river to harness power.

The Chief Minister had made the statement during his meeting with Ardent Basaiawmoit, leader of the People’s Movement, on Thursday.

After the meeting, Basaiawmoit claimed that the Chief Minister had admitted that it would not be possible for the neighbouring state to set up the proposed micro-hydel power project in West Khasi Hills district.

The proposed project was earlier opposed by the UDP who had brought the issue to the notice of the State government two days ago.

On the other hand, Kamrup Deputy Commissioner SK Roy had reportedly claimed that the project site is far from the inter-state border.
