SHILLONG: The call for introduction of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State is gradually growing stronger with more organisations lending their voice to the same.

The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya, in a meeting held on Saturday evening, discussed a presentation from the Chairman of the Council, John F Kharshiing, on various aspects related to ILP. The meeting also discussed the Mizo ILP notifications.

Kharshiing informed the gathering that he had to pay a fine in 1997 for landing at the Aizawl Airport without an ILP.

The Council asked the State Government to immediately notify ILP in areas under the autonomous district councils.

The meeting also asked the Government to urgently amend the Meghalaya Land Transfer Act and empower traditional institutions to enable them to check influx.

Recently, the High Powered Committee chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Bindo Lanong made a recommendation to the Government to introduce ILP considering the demands from various quarters.

The Committee announced by Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma during the last Assembly session, will submit its final report to the Government shortly.
