Shillong: Like in other parts of the Catholic world, the members of the faithful of the local Catholic Church at Umpling formally launched ‘The Year of Faith’ with the hoisting of the church flag by the Divine Saviour Parish Priest, Fr Edmund Gomes, at the solemn mass which preceded the annual Eucharistic procession held in the afternoon in this locality here on Sunday.

The Catholic Church at Umpling is one of the oldest local churches which celebrated its centenary year not long after the church in north-east India had celebrated its centenary year in 1990.

In his homily, at the well attended solemn mass, the Parish Priest Fr Edmund Gomes said the Catholic Church in the world is celebrating The Year of Faith which globally began on October 11.

He said Pope Benedict XVI has declared October 11, 2012 to November 23, 2013 as The Year of Faith for the church worldwide as an occasion for the Catholic faithful ‘to not only renew their faith but to also live it.’
